SUSTAINABLE PAREMOREMO
Just a quick update on where things are at. The meeting this Wednesday should be a great opportunity to refine the overall forward direction and celebrate what has been achieved.
A brief update on the 4 areas we originally defined as being key areas:
Natural Environment - Pest Free Pare is well underway thanks to Derry's hard work. We have great support from Nick Beveridge from Forest & Bird. Weed control has been started with help from Holly from Kaipatiki, many local people have been carrying out weed control on their own properties. Te Araroa, under the guidance of Mike and Cathy Bourne have embarked on a street weed clean up. Mark Read has a great knowledge of local birds and plants and is keen to take on a role of advising and helping local people in this area.
Resource Management and Efficiency - I am currently working with Kate and the Council on a pilot project to focus on resource management within the home. More about this soon.
Village Market - currently talking with Albany Village Business Association who are keen to run a Village Market in Kell Park. They now have all the information we collected and are really wanting to operate something along the same lines as we looked at doing. Friday evenings, all home made/locally produced goods for sale, include the arts, etc. If you are interested in working with the AVBA on this, please let me know as they are a neat group of people who are really wanting to create a wonderful village atmosphere in Kell Park. They are very keen to have any local people involved. It is a maybe a great opportunity for Paremoremo people to establish a co-op for selling local produce.
Organic Gardening - There have been garden visits, a demonstration on setting up a no dig garden by Dee Pigneguy, tree pruning demonstration by Rob Velseboer and more recently, Emma & Savannah have taken the gardening to a new level with the Arbor Day celebration at school on Friday. Plans are to keep the momentum going with this. There are so many local people interested in gardening, it is going to be great sharing ideas and learning more in this area. With the set up at school, Ridgeview is now well positioned to be the garden learning centre for all ages.
We now have a community website running, we have the Pare Publisher distributed monthly and Katrina Wilson is in the process of establishing a Charitable Trust to enable us to apply for the various types of funding that can help us to achieve so much more.

WHERE DO YOU SEE PAREMOREMO WITHIN THE NEW AUCKLAND?
A topic of interest to a lot of us recently has been the shaping of a new Council in Auckland. Andy Riley, our local Pare resident on the Albany Community Board, has organised a meeting at the Community Club, 503 Paremoremo Road next Tuesday 26th May

About Paremoremo
Paremoremo is a largely rural locality west of Albany on the northern fringe of Auckland, New Zealand.
Paremoremo was a small community on the Upper Waitemata Harbour which saw European settlement grow following the construction of a wharf at the foot of Attwood Road. Early last century it was known for its farms, market gardens and orchards. Passengers and cargo travelled to the city by the launches and small ferries of the period. More recently, its main claim to fame (or notoriety) was as home of Paremoremo Prison, New Zealand's main maximum security prison built in the mid-60's. However, since that institution's renaming as "Auckland Prison" in the 1990's, it is more commonly recognised as a desirable place to live within easy commuting distance of Auckland City, and just 8 minutes from the growing centre of Albany.
